Fundamentalism, Homos, and Sex Education

Fundamentalism: the illogical extension of unreasonOn the subject of sex education Fundamentalists often insist on none at all, or what they call abstinence education which is exactly no sex ed at all. This seems to hold true no matter which ridiculous set of improbable fairy tales a particular fundamentalist insists is the word of their invisible super-pal.

The implication seems to be that if children are taught the facts of human sexuality it will lead inevitably to all night sex orgies in every teenager's bedroom across the particular nation that is afflicted with fundamentalists. In the world of objective reality it is hormones that lead to teen sex, it always has been, and if we are wise it always will be.

Abstinence-only sex education has been clearly shown to have the opposite effect of the stated intention of reducing unwanted pregnancies and the spread of STDs. Yet, as is the usual case when facts conflict with dogma, this reality has no impact on the passionate demands of know-nothing faithful that their children be shielded from contact with reality.

We believe that the same dynamic is at work in the perfervid demands on the part of the faithful that their children must be shielded, as long as humanly possible, from the knowledge of the existence of gay people.

Just as knowledge of sexuality will inevitably result in promiscuous behavior, in their view, so too knowledge of the existence of gay people will cause at least some, if not all, of their children to become queer. Perhaps the percentage of children who become queer as a result of knowing that queer people exist is directly proportional to the number of books about gay penguins in the local library.

This blog is named Closetization, we are setting out to discuss and hopefully understand why it is so important to some people that GLBT folk stay in or rush back into their closets.

To the fervently faithful fundie knowledge of birth control will lead to heterosexual couplings and knowledge of homosexuality will lead to their children developing crushes on their playmates. To a rational person these fears are obviously unfounded. Teens have always had sex and some of them have always been gay. Knowledge does not determine a person's sexual orientation, nor does it make them promiscuous.

The real danger of knowledge is that it exposes the falsehoods of religious dogma, and to a Fundamentalist of any flavor, the thing that must be protected above all others is the security of their ignorance. Fundamentalists do get one thing right, knowledge is their enemy.

Being out of the closet does not cause others to become gay, but because it illustrates the fact that perfectly ordinary people from all walks of life can be and sometimes are queer, it does expose the falsehoods on which Jeebus-brand bigotry relies.

As Harvey Milk pointed out so well, coming out directly promotes gay liberation.
